This blog provides a step-by-step guide on ow to pay your self-assessment income tax online in India through the official Income Tax portal. It’s ideal for taxpayers who need to settle their tax dues before filing their returns.
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and log in to your
account.

Step 2: Click on the “e-File” tab and select “e-Pay Tax” option.
Step 3: Click on the “e-Pay Tax” option.
Step 4: Now, click on the new payment button.
Step 5: Select ‘Income Tax’ from the list of options and click on
‘Proceed’.
Step 6: Select the relevant correct ‘Assessment Year’ from the drop-down
menu
Step 7: Select ‘Self-Assessment Tax (300)’ from the ‘Type of Payment(Minor
Head’ dropdown menu and click ‘Continue’.
Step 8: Enter the tax amounts as per the breakup and click ‘Continue’.
Step 8: Select the preferred payment mode.
You can pay via:
- Net
Banking (most banks supported) - Debit
Card (limited banks) - UPI
or RTGS/NEFT (via offline bank visit) - Payment
Gateway (with multiple options)
Step 9: After the payment is successful, you can download the Challan by clicking on the download button.
You’ll receive a BSR Code, Challan Serial Number, and payment date. Save or print this for ITR filing.
📌 Things to Keep in Mind:
- Always verify your payment on the Income Tax portal after 24–48 hours.
- Ensure correct PAN and assessment year to avoid mismatch.
- Include this payment in your ITR under “Self-assessment tax paid”.
